#03 Setting Up a Template Model

Live2D Cubism 2.0 introduces the new Template function.
This allows a new model to inherit the structure and motion (parameters) of another completed model.

How to use the template function

First prepare the new model that is going to inherit from the template model.
Follow the previous chapter #02 to setup this model imported from a PSD file.

To use the Template function, go to "File"
 → "Apply Template".

Select the model to be used as the template.
In this case, we choose "Epsilon".

    Position and size adjustment

A template preview window opens up.
It has your own model in the canvas overlapping the template model.

Clicking on the model would trigger the select state of the template model.
Left click to move the template model.
Right click to resize the template model.

【1】Align the body

First, align the template's body size with your model's.
Focus on centering the neck and matching the shoulder width.

【2】Align the face

Next, work on the face alignment.

Important! : Try using the parameters to adjust your template!
The parameters with the "@" in front is available for making adjustments on some parts, such as the eyes and mouth.
(For the face, use Angle X and Y parameters.)

「@Face Size」,「@Face Length」and「@Face position Y」are suitable for adjusting the size and position of the face.

【3】Align the eyes

「@Eye Size」,「@Eye Position X」and「@Eye Position Y」are suitable for adjusting the size and position of the eyes.

【4】Align the eyebrows

「@Eyebrow Position X」「@Eyebrow Position Y」are suitable for adjusting the position of the eyebrows.

「@Mouth Size」「@Mouth Position X」「@Mouth Position Y」are suitable for adjusting the size and position of the mouth.

【6】Align the nose

「@Nose Position Y」is suitable for adjusting the height of the nose

TIPS : Do the eyebrows go with the mouth shape?
If the parameters with the "@" do not provide the ideal shape of the eyebrows and mouth, use the normal parameters to complete the alignment.
Adjust the eyebrows angle or the mouth shape of the template to match your model.

【7】Applying the template

Once aligned the size and position of the template, click「Apply Template Preview」button to proceed.

IMPORTANT! : Alignment accuracy matters!
Match the template to your model as fit as possible.
If its done roughly, the result would be significantly affected.

    Referencing the corresponding parts

In the "Preview" window, the template and your model will be displayed side by side.
Your model has inherited the motions from the template model, acting simultaneously.
(Click the "Play" button or the "F" key to play / stop the motion.)

Your model which is performing on right may seem unnatural in some motions.
It is caused by the error in the referencing of the corresponding parts between the template and your model. Correction is required.
Quite frequently, the fine details around the mouth and eyes parts are the cause the problem.

In this particular example, the left eyelid needs correction.

TIPS :  Setting for draw order
The default setting "Auto set Draw Order" usually optimize the result.
If you want your model to inherit the draw order from the template model, select "Adjust Draw Order to template".
If you want to keep it the same as your original PSD file that you've imported, select "Don't Change Draw Order".

Correcting the parts referencing

When hovering above the model on the right window, the two corresponding parts would be highlighted, as seen below.

Left click on a part to open a drop-down menu parts to be selected.
Selecting an option would highlight the part in green frame.
The template model on the left window would respond by highlighting the equivalent area in green frame.
Also, if you want to select one of the parts that is layered underneath, select that option from the menu to change the target.

Next, on the left window, left click to select the intended corresponding part (eye lid)  on the template model.
This time, a red frame will be displayed around the selected part.

Once you have selected the two corresponding parts, click the「Link Matching Components」button(or the "S" key)to establish the association.

The referencing of the two corresponding parts is now correct.
When ready to move on, click the "OK" button.

Upon applying the template, it returns to the canvas.
The parameters are all setup.

TIPS : Some movements are still broken! I want to undo!
If you're not satisfied with the template applied just now, do not panic. Simply Undo a step by hitting the undo hotkey "Ctrl" + "Z".
Then click on "Apply Template" in the "File" menu again.
Now you may continue your adjustments.
Please make sure you did Undo before re-applying the template.
